Einstein, Relativity, Nutrition, and Health

225px-Einstein1921_by_F_Schmutzer_4Einstein spent a great deal of time looking for the universal theory that would unite the theories of the very large things around us (universe, galaxies, black holes) and the very small things (neutrinos, quarks, leptons) inside and around us. His well known theories of Special Relativity and General Relativity showed the relationship between the speed of light, gravity, time, and point of view in the grand scheme of things. Quantum theory and  the very small things didn’t always fit in with his big picture.

My veterinary education described all the organs and how the body systems worked. We learned what went wrong with what and how to treat it. Many skin, ear, seizure and bowel disorders were classified as idiopathic (cause unknown). We learned how to treat the symptoms, even if the cause was uncertain.dog_gi2

The Immune System Fights Back

In actual fact, the cause of most medical problems IS known. Its name is inflammation. When the immune system encounters an invader, it summons help thus causing inflammation. If the invader is vanquished, the inflammation subsides, and the body continues going about the business of staying healthy. If the immune system under or over reacts, the infection may cause illness or death. For example, pneumonia occurs because the immune system failed to clear a bacterial or viral infection of the lungs. When the immune system is over stimulated autoimmune diseases or tumors can occur. Fibrosarcoma developing at vaccine sites in some cats and blood cells attacked by their own antibodies after vaccination in a few dogs are cases of “immune systems gone wild.”

immune system1Good Nutrition is Prevention

Anything we can do to keep the immune system working well, helps our pets stay healthy. Prevention is always better than having to deal with a problem. During the past 10 years, I have found that nutritional intervention often helps decrease or eliminate the uncomfortable symptoms in many chronic diseases. That is why I am so excited about helping you with your dog’s skin, ear, stomach, bowel, colitis, anal glanditis, seizures or other idiopathic, chronic problems that seem to keep coming back after the meds run out. These chronic problems are not often cured by medication, but I have found that changing the ingredients in the dog food and adding healthy human food almost always  helps.

In my book Dog Dish Diet: Sensible Nutrition for Your Dog’s Health, I show you how to make  good nutritional choices based on your pet’s needs. After studying and applying concepts of human and animalddd cover nutrition to common medical problems the past 5 years, I have found that I cannot address illness without considering nutrition. Hippocrates said.”Let your food be medicine and your medicine food.” This universal truth may be as important for us and our pets as Einstein’s theories. Check back in a week or two for the book. Let the healing begin! Bone Appetit!
