Who is Dr. Greg?
Dr. Greg Martinez, DVM
“After almost 30 years as a veterinarian—10 of these years spent treating my patients and my own pets with a combination of medical and nutritional science—I believe that pet owners have it within their power to cure many of their animals’ most common ailments,” says Dr. Greg Martinez, DVM. “We know that healthful eating is critical to human’s well-being; I believe that pet junk food, empty calories and food allergies are making our dogs and cats similarly sick.”
Since graduating from UC Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980, Dr. Martinez has served the veterinary needs of Gilroy and the Santa Clara Valley, and he’s been a partner/owner of the Gilroy Veterinary Hospital since 1987. Early in his career, he practiced on farm animal as well as small animals; today his practice is primarily focused on the health of dogs and cats.
His long career and a lifetime dedicated to animals has provided Dr. Martinez the opportunity to witness the dramatic increase in chronic conditions—ranging from dry, itchy skin and red, goopy ears to digestive problems, diabetes, mild seizures, and an epidemic of overweight and obese pets. Sharing what he has learned about pet nutrition and its direct impact on health with as many pet owners as possible has become his primary objective. Thousands of pet owners in Gilroy and the Santa Clara Valley are advocates of his methods, thanks to the healing and relief he has brought to their dogs and cats. In 2009 Dr. Martinez brings his brand of nutritional medicine to the general public through the publication of his first book, Dr. Greg’s Dog Dish Diet: Sensible Nutrition for Your Dog’s Health (Riparian Press).
Dr. Martinez is an active participant in the Gilroy community. He is a member of Gilroy Rotary and has served on the Board of Directors of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce. In 2000 he was selected Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Man Of The Year.
Much of Dr. Martinez’s community activity focuses on working with youth. Drawing from his years in the Big Brothers of America program (both as a little brother and a big brother), he speaks from experience: “Creating bonds with animals and knowing you can do something to help, can be a powerful force on young people who might otherwise get into trouble. Being able to help, even in a small way, is most rewarding.” In an effort to attract young people into a meaningful and fulfilling opportunity as a vet technician, he helps teach veterinary science at Gilroy High School. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Bonfante Garden and has encouraged local schools to use the park for their field trips.
Dr. Martinez has been married to Lonna Martinez for 32 years. While they have no children, at any given time they are parents to at least three dogs and three cats. Dr. Martinez is an active outdoorsman and nature enthusiast. He likes to hike and swim. He’s also an advocate of lifelong learning and an eager student himself.
