SURGERY ALERT. IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE UNCOMFORTABLE WATCHING ACTUAL SURGERIES, YOU MIGHT WANT TO PASS ON WATCHING THE VIDEOS BELOW. THEY ARE SCIENTIFIC AND ACCURATE…BUT I RECOGNIZE THAT THEY’RE NOT FOR EVERYONE.

I am deeply concerned about the affect many of our commercial dog foods are having on the health of our pets. That’s why I wrote Dr. Greg’s Dog Dish Diet. But as I’m a veterinarian in Gilroy, California, I’m interested in all aspects of pet health and welfare. I also teach aspiring vet techs at our local high school, which means that I’m always thinking about the many aspects of pet health. From time to time, I’ll be sharing my thoughts and videos. I hope you’ll find this information useful. -Dr. Greg

Controlling the Puppy Population
Dog ownership comes with responsibilities, and one of these is making sure your dogs are not contributing to the unwanted puppy population. That’s why spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) are important aspects of veterinary care. I realize any surgery can be a little scary, so I’ve made some videos showing an actual spay and neutering done in my hospital. I think seeing the operation will help you feel more comfortable talking with your vet about these procedures.

The All-Too-Common Car Accident
Let’s face it, when dog meets car, it’s usually the dog that pays a high price. I’m sure you all try to keep your pets out of harm’s way, but sometimes accidents happen. The video below shows Lucy the Lab. Not only did she get a nasty case of road rash, but she has a broken femur. I thought you’d like to see how we use a small steel rod to repair the break.

A Bald Spot Might Be Mites
If your dog has a small bald spot, he’s probably not going bald. It’s most likely a medical condition, and one possibility could be Demodex Mites. You might know the ailment by its more common name–mange. A patient named Daisy recently had the mites; I thought you might like to see the culprits up close.
